Five Minute Friday~ Listen

Five minutes on “Listen”…

I can count on one hand the number of Sundays that I missed going to church while I was growing up.

My Daddy was the pastor and so every Sunday morning, I would sit with my mom and sisters on the left hand side of the church, 3rd pew from the front.

I wish that I could say that I listened to every word that my pastor Daddy said, but this would not be true. Instead, I spent many Sundays laughing with my sisters while we looked through the hymn book and added “under the bed” to the hymn titles. Other Sundays, I would go through the bulletin and color in all of the circles made by letters with my pen.

In my teen years, I was more interested in the boys beside me then the words my Daddy was speaking.

But even though I did not listen well, I heard what he was saying. Because my Daddy didn’t only say the words he believed. He lived them.

It’s been twenty years since I sat under his preaching, but his words still echo in my heart.

…the Lord is near to those who call on Him…

…He is mighty to save…

…you can do all things through Him…

…God sure must love green…

….in our inadequacies, Christ is sufficient…

Now I have kids of my own and it is their Daddy who is preaching every Sunday. And I wonder how much they hear. They are busy with their cars and their little dolls and their coloring.

But they too have a Daddy who lives out what he preaches.

And so, I pray that they would listen with their hearts.

To all of the Daddys who live out what they say~ Happy Father’s Day! You are to be celebrated. And may you know that even when your little ones don’t seem to be listening, they are. And they will be forever blessed by the words that you speak and by the lives that you live.

On Fridays, I join with a beautiful community of writers to write for five minutes without over thinking- just for the pure love of writing. Today’s prompt was “listen”. Join in? Head over to Lisa-Jo’s blog to read other great posts!
