How to Be Beautiful
I teach Sunday school to a group of junior and senior high girls. I started last Fall and I love it. Each week surprises me. The best thing about teaching is that I am constantly learning something new.
This week was no different. We are currently working through the book “Speak Love” by Annie Downs and yesterday we were in chapter 11. The focus of the chapter was on speaking love to ourselves- not in the-greatest-love-of-all sense, but in the this-is-how-Jesus-sees-you sense. Annie encouraged us to look at 1 Peter 3.
I have introduced my girls to my favorite form of Bible study- the use of colored pencils to highlight key words or phrases. As we read through 1 Peter 3, we highlighted the commands. The reason that I love this type of study, is because later you can go back and read just the words that you emphasized. I loved what we found in this chapter and thought I would share it with you.
The commands in 1 Peter 3
…(let your beauty) be that of your inner self
…do what is right and do not give way to fear
…treat others with respect
…live in harmony
…love as brothers
…be compassionate and humble
…do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing
…keep your tongue from evil, your lips from deceitful speech
…turn from evil
…seek peace and pursue it
…do not fear what others fear
…do not be frightened
…set apart Christ as Lord
…always be prepared
…do all things with gentleness and respect
It struck me as we talked about these things that THIS is the key, the secret to true beauty. We make it more complicated than it is. We need to replace the lies we tell ourselves- I’m not good enough, I’m not pretty enough, I’m not ENOUGH- with these truths. Because we will never be enough in ourselves (what does that mean anyway?!!!). But in Christ? We are more than enough.
So there you have it. How to be beautiful from 1 Peter 3.
